Claire (Olive) Hospital Matron and Wife
Claire Olive was the ninth of the ten children born to Anna and John Wheeler at Titi Farm, Mauku.
Olive was only a toddler - three years old - when her mother died in 1883, and the extended family helped raise Olive. When she was still a teenager (1894) her mother's sister Mary (Minnie) Henry returned from Tahiti where she had married Samuel Pinder Henry. With her older sisters (Lottie and Edith) employed in Auckland, or dead (Catherine died in 1891) Olive went and stayed with Minnie and her family at Brookside. When the Henrys moved to their first NZ property at Otaua Olive went with them and was a first day pupil a]when the Otaua School opened.
Like her sister Gertrude she trained as a nurse. and went on to become matron at the Northern Wairoa Hospital near Wellsford. There she met and married Bob Rope, who was a shipwright. They had no children.
