Leonora (Nora) Florence
Nora was to share her birth date of 20th September with her younger brother Eric, also the first of the family to be born at Otaua in 1900. Starting primary school there, going onto Waiuku Primary School in 1908, also attending Pukeoware for a short time, before entering Auckland Girls Grammar School in 1915-1916. Nora stayed at home as a companion to her widowed mother, whom had lost her husband when Nora was only thirteen years old.
The Wallace Rd, property had a grass tennis court so there was frequent tennis, a sport which she excelled at, there was also Golf to play, Nora
going onto win numerous trophies- Ladies Champion at Royal Oak Tennis Club, Ladies Champion at Otahuhu (now Grange) Golf Club.
Quieter pastime was gardening, and the needlework of tapestry. There was a move to 15 Atherton Rd, Epsom where nieces and nephews would visit, later to I Tahuri Rd, Newmarket. It was during this period that nieces would go to stay and can be remembered being taken for rides on the trams into Newmarket and to the Zoo, a highlight for country children. Nora's mother, Flossie, had always had a dream of owning a brick home, her wish was granted late in 1957 when they moved to 41 Ranfurly Rd, Epsom. Flossie died about six months later.
Nora made the move to Hamilton to live after Flossie's death, buying a property within walking distance of brother, Claude's place. Outdoor
bowls now took an active part in Nora life, becoming Vice President of Beerscourt Ladies Bowling Club. There is an outdoor seat at the bowling greens in memory of Nora.
