Harold Stuart Mellsop was the sixth, and youngest child of Bertie & Flossie Mellsop born on 23rd February 1909 in Waiuku.
He was only four years old when his father died, and it was shortly after this that his mother Flossie moved her family to Papatoetoe.
This enabled the older boys to live at home and travel by train to Auckland Boys Grammar where Stuart attended from 1923, the boys were known to give the Station Master at various stops, a hard time! Whether they knew that the Remuera Station Master was a Hamlin relation, it is not known (their Mothers' second cousin), Stuart attended Papatoetoe Primary School. Leaving school during the depression his brother, Laurence was able to secure him a position with the Bank of New Zealand. Stuart spent all his working life with the Bank. He topped NZ in the Bankers Diploma, resulting in many moves throughout his banking career within the Auckland area.
Stuart took an interest in Hockey and Tennis. Won a medal of which only 10 have been executed I believe. The medal being presented by By G.G.Gerard. He built his own home in Mangere Bridge, and help build the Eden Gardens, in Auckland, of which there is a path
named after him. He did not suffer fools, but had a wonderful sense of humour.
During the WW2 he was in the Home Guard being turned down for active service, due to trouble with his legs, this upset Stuart very much. He was very much for King and Country.
Col and Stuart had two children both born in Auckland, and still live there. Tim and Robyn. Stuart died on his 65th wedding anniversary 30th September 1998, his ashes were scattered in his beloved Eden Gardens.
