Goldwin Cecil Gordon Wheeler - Linesman and Networker
Goldie was the second surviving child of Harry and Gwen Hill.
Goldie became the family “glue” ringing everyone in the family to pass on the news to other family members. While his sister Vere was the letter writer, Goldie was the Toll Call man!
“Uncle Goldie” was a linesman for the ‘P and T’ (NZ Post and Telegraph) mainly in the Pukekohe area where he lived with his beloved sister, Vere.
Goldie was a very good sportsman playing golf and bowls and enjoying the companionship of other sportsmen.
Prior to this, Uncle Goldie had served in the NZ Army in North Africa, along with his younger brother, Earn.
According to family story, Uncle Goldie was in love with the beautiful, vivacious red head, “Bennie” Gardner and she with him but sadly Goldie’s father Harry had intercepted their letters and so both thought the other no longer cared, leading to the loss of that relationship.
Goldie was a gentle person and probably also felt the loss when Vere left Pukekohe for her new life and husband in Whangarei. Joyce said his Father had been very strict with him when he was young.
Although Goldie never married, he was a family-oriented person who enjoyed the simple things of life, including his favourite game: bowls.
