Kathleen Robinson
John Thomas Mellsop and Charlotte Crispe had a sixth child, Kathleen, who was their third daughter. She was born in 1870 at Glenbrook, dying in 1960 at the great age of 89 years.
Kathleen, although she has no living descendants, with her only grandchild, Valerie dying in 1957, has left a living memorial in the magnificent Oak trees that she planted on the Knockmaroon property on Station Road, Glenbrook, in 1890—92. These oak trees have heritage grading on them within the Franklin County, under the title of Cultural Heritage. Young seedlings of these trees are in the care of family members to-day.
Leonard Robinson's early schooling was at Brookside, along with his siblings, and many cousins. On leaving school he was a surveyor and contractor in Gisborne, Rotorua, and elsewhere in the Auckland Province. He would have known his future wife almost all of his life, as they were cousins. Leonard's mother was Mary Jane Heywood (Polly) Crispe.
Kathleen and Leonard Robinson were married on December 1901 shortly after they went to Gore to live, where Leonard had a position as Dredgemaster at Waikaka then at Mataura, in Southland, for both United, and Paterson's Freehold. Leonard gave up the position as dredgemaster becoming a bookseller and stationer in Mataura, once his health started to deteriorate, being compelled to take things a little easier.
One may wonder why they had removed themselves so far away from their families in the Waiuku District. Leonard's parents had a boarding house in Rotorua, and of course there were many tourists visiting the thermal area of Rotorua, and on one of these occasion's his sister Annie (Amy) met the dashing James Patterson, from Mataura, Southland. She accepted his proposal of marriage and went south to live in 1895.
Kathleen and Leonard were to spend the next sixteen years in Southland with Zillah and Leonard being born there. The Robinson's youngest child Lillian Beatrice was born in 1911. The family ties were so strong that Kathleen returned to the Waiuku district, where she had the support of family after the death of her husband.
Leonard who was of a bright and cheerful disposition making many friends in the Southland district, died of heart failure on Saturday the 18th December 1915 at his home in Mataura. Leonard is buried in the Matarua Cemetery, Southland.
Leonard was a member of Waikaka Lodge No 151, Waikaka Anglican Church being one of those prominent in the building of the Church.
