William Edward - Willie - Bachelor Farmer
William Edward Wheeler was the third of the children born to Anna and John Wheeler at Titi Farm, Mauku. His mother died a few days before his 13th birthday.
Willie went farming, and never married. He had property at Ruakiwi, as did brother Arthur, which was in Te Akau. A contemporary of his second cousin, Samuel Ernest Henry, Samuel (also living in Te Akau) was able to do a favour or two for the family, and no doubt the Wheeler brothers reciprocated. WIllie once owned the distinctive property that used to be known as "the Orchid House" located heading north up the Bombay Hill on the Southern Motorway a few kilometres north of the Coromandel junction. According to his niece, Jean Troughton, Willie fitted the model for the Wheeler men who were all "tall and quietly spoken." William Edward Wheeler's dates: Born 10 February 1870 at Mauku. Died 8 July 1947, at Mt Eden, Auckland Interred at Waikumete Cemetery. |
